Taylor's Matinee Jacket

I finished this lovely matinee jacket last night. The pattern is a Peter Gregory design. I fell in love with the pattern and had to try it right away. It was difficult enough with plenty of kb and pb in the borders. The pattern also called for 3.75mm needles for the main part of the jacket and as I am quite a tight tension knitter, this might have been wrong for me. The next time I will stay on the 4mm for DK! I am overall pleased with the result and I hope Tayor's mum is too.

This is Elizabeth - posing in my recent knitting projects. She is well over 40 years old and I believe she was used as a model for babies clothes in a shop window - so she was secondhand when I got her. My godmother gave her to me when I was about 3, so I have known her "all my life". I truly believed that she was a real person and I loved her as any "mother" would love her baby (with tender loving care). I had all the equipment, cot, clothes and a wonderful red and white pram. I still have the pram, which is big enough to hold a real baby. I also have the original clothes, the white dress with flowers in the photo is what she was wearing when I first got her. My godmother and my mother made a layette, including this dress, a petticoat, aran cardigan, gloves, tights and a complete set of blankets and pillow. Was I spoiled or what.

When my own daughter was old enough to play with dolls I tried to introduce Elizabeth to her thinking she would have the same attachment to dolls as I did. I was wrong, Elizabeth was tossed in the corner, naked, and I eventually put her in the attic, that was 8 years ago.
I took her down a few weeks ago and she is just right for modelling my little knitted things.

The Bolero is from a Patons book, the frilly cardigan is a Peter Pan pattern and the blue set is a Sirdar pattern from their Early Arrivals book.

This rose grows outside my office and has the most beautiful scent. The office was once a dwelling house and the garden is dotted with gems like this. I just thought that the rose was perfectly "out" and wanted to capture it before our weather spoiled the moment!!

I painted (oil) this copy of an Iron Maiden album cover - over the space of 4 years!!! I finished it recently - it measures 4ftX4ft. I have done a few smaller versions, much easier, and I would like to paint (acrylic) some Dio covers too. We have a LP collection in the attic and there are enough album covers to last me a lifetime. Meanwhile I am just glad to get this one out of the "studio"!!!

The Flight of the Earls - Starting Point!

This is a photo of the plaque which was unveilled in Ballindrait, Co. Donegal on the 400th anniversary of the flight of the Earls. I was waiting for my friend to collect me the day we climbed Muckish, and took the opportunity to take a photo. The plaque is beside the bridge where the Earls met and started their journey to Rathmullan where they went to "the continent" never to return, the rest, as they say, is history! Ballindrait, transalted Baile an Droichead, town of the bridge. I have lived near this village since I was three and only recently discovered the significance of one of the oldest bridges in Ireland which is still in use.

Friday 26th June 2009

Here we are, all 108 of us, at the big challenge!! We climbed this mountain, Muckish, 666 metres, for a colleague who is climbing his own mountain - fighting cancer.

It was a tough climb and climbing to the summit was challenging enough, only to be met by a sea of jagged rocks which seemed to go on for miles. It was like being on another planet. It took me over one and a half hours, but everyone agrees - the "high" that we felt was something else!!!!

Coming back down had its' own challenges, choosing the right path and getting a good foothold. Heathers look solid enough but they collapse like a sponge when stood on!!!!

Afterwards we all had refreshments at The Lagoon, entertained by a group of local Set Dancers - who probably wondered where the heck all these eejits came out of!!

There I am picking my way through the rocks on the summit!

These are the gloves worn by Shay Given in his first match with Man City. They were donated to a local chrity (Drumboe House) and my DS got the chance to try them on before the auction. The gloves are quite heavy and re-inforced on each finger, not just your average goalkeeper's glove!!! They raised over €2000.

These are the penultimate pair before Christmas. Again, they don't look like much until they are worn, I was getting worried that they looked too scrawny, but they are ribbed and they stretch quite well, and the fit is nice and snug. All the patterns for the gloves can be found in various places on Ravelry. Get over there and check out all the great designers.

This is the first chapter of my Nativity Collection. I have finished Mary and Baby Jesus except for the facial features. I intend to do this for all the figures at the same time so that I can get "good" techniques after a couple of figures!!! I am working on Joseph now and hope to have him complete soon. This is also for a gift. I used a pattern by Sirdar and the yarn is James C.Brett - Rio. I love this yarn, it is DK weight but seemed much thicker so I didn't have to worry about the size "going smaller" than I wanted!! I am a tight knitter, so I end up with a smaller than needed if I go by the pattern size, can't help myself, it comes from years of being told, "knit your bands tight" when doing Aran Sweaters!!! I love the way that the bobbles are different colours, this wool is really nice.

These are for a lovely Brazillian girl who is a friend of my DD. She is in Ireland for one year studying and she feels the cold bite of the cold weather more than we do. I modified them a "bit" and added a little "belt" with two buttons - DD says that these "green, yellow, blue" are colours on the Brazillian flag, hope she is right!!

This is a poncho I knit for my DD about 4 years ago. I was ready for "the big house" by the time I had it finished. The pattern was repeated, cable and honeycomb and was monotonus. BUT, I was pleased with the result and when the "fashion" was over I couldn't part with it, had to keep it for posterity or as a sign of how I can keep my sanity.

I finished this last week, but couldn't get buttons until yesterday. This is a pattern which I bought as a "lot" in a charity shop or 2nd hand bookstore. It was between pages of another book, what a nice surprise. I jazzed it up a bit by putting a couple of crochet flowers on the front, it was just a little too plain I thought.

This is a Sirdar pattern from the early '90's. I knit it first for my friend's baby, since then I have knit dozens of these. This one is for no one in particular, but I thought it turned out so well in the photograph that I would post it to my blog. There are pants and booties in the pattern as well. The cardigan "grows" with the baby, i expect it is to do with the garter stitch row, giving a pleated effect.

These armwarmers are for my DD and I finished them this morning (before work)!!! The pattern is excellent and can be found on Craftylis blog or on Ravelry. The yarn is Marble by James C. Brett, it is lovely, and I like the way you don't know how the stripes will develop. I haven't been able to get "affordable" sock yarn locally, yesterday 100g was costing me £8stg which would be about $16 or €12!!! This yarn (Marblle) was £2 per 100g, and I will be buying this again for sure. I could hardly get a decent photo to, as it's hard to get a good shot of your own arm, my neck didn't seem long enough!!!

This is another Sirdar Snuggly hat, I am ticking off the designs on the leaflet one by one!!! Who knows I may knit some of them more than once, they are excellent, fast, easy and I can watch the tv while working, apparently it is great for brain training too, so Dr K says in his cheeky little remarks!!! I have a brain age of 29 which I reached on my 44th birthday on Thursday, not bad, I was chuffed to bits!!

These are 2 little hats for my friends nephews - age 6m and 2m. I don't have anyone to model them! The pattern is Sirdar Fair Isle/Snuggly. It is a great pattern - Jumper, Hat and Blanket. I have knit the Jumper & Hat before and I was very satisfied with the results. I stuck to the proper yarn for the jumper & hat, but this time I just used up a couple of odds and ends, but I am still pleased with the results.

This is the first dishcloth I have ever made!!! I didn't think anyone made dishcloths until I joined groups and Ravelry. The pattern is reversible and would be easily adapted to a larger item - cot blanket for example. I am delighted with myself to have mastered this complex pattern, although after a few rows it becomes easy to remember. It is another step in the direction of "crochetability" for me!!!

Another little hat - I can't resist this pattern, I went the whole hog and put a crochet flower on too. I made the flower without a pattern, so I am very proud of myself!!!! I have no idea yet who will take these little hats, so anyone from a baby unit in Donegal, Derry or even in the rest of the country, can leave a comment. I am turning out one a night and as the crochet technique gets better, I will have no trouble making 3 or 4!!!!

This is a little jacket which I have knit for a "just-in-case" present. Sometimes a workmate or friend will ask if I have anything knit for a baby, so I like to keep a few things handy Just-in-case!!! The pattern is from a booklet which I bought as part of a "lot" in a 2nd hand book store. I got about 200 patterns in leaflet/book form, I was so happy. There are some very old Patons leaflets among these, and one booklet devoted to booties!!

The jacket turned out beautiful, although the pattern was a tad awkward, by this I mean that the lace pattern was worked on the wrong side as well as the right side, I like to have a straight row between patterns so that I can have a look at the TV!!!! Anyway, I will probably do this one again because the result was well worth the effort, but not a jacket to knit if I am in a hurry for a quick pressie!!!

These are my first crochet booties, and as you can see they are slightly different!!! I am so used to knitting booties and could almost knit anything with my eyes closed - but I have to concentrate so much when doing crochet!!! The other thing I have a problem with is tension. I am a "tight" knitter and usually do a size bigger than needed because of my tension. A consistant tension is more difficult for me to maintain in crochet, but I expect that I will get better with practice!!

This hat is called Preemie Ribbed Beanie, and is on Suzies Stuff site as a free pattern. I LOVED this pattern, and learned 2 new stitches, fpdc & bpdc, the effect of these stitches pleased me so much, I will be looking for them in other patterns!! I used scraps of wool which would usually have been dumped, so I will be keeping "bits" in future to make more of these.

I was so excited, and the shop assistant was looking for €2 each, which I thought was a bit expensive for a 2nd hand book, but anyway I went to walk back to the bookcase when she shouted "OK give me €4 for all of them" I couldn't believe my luck!! I took them home and had a good look through them I decided that they were worth more than she asked in the first place!!! I give lots to that chartiy shop, and I buy some things too, so I don't feel TOO guilty. The books have knitting, crochet, sewing and some other needlecraft stuff, all from the 1970's, some fantastic "Retro" things. I will post anything I make here so you can see what a bargain I got!

This is a book which was given to me by my Granny about 20 years ago. I wrote to P & B and they dated the book 1938. There are patterns for babies, children and adults - underwear and outerwear!! There is also lots of instructions for stitches in K & C. I keep this book tucked away safely because the cover is a bit delicate - the inside pages are much more durable and are unharmed by the use which it received. I would say that the patterns were done so many times that the bookwas not needed every time!!!

This is my first garment entirely crocheted. A few weeks ago I decided to make use of my large collection of patterns, having always knit my favourites, the others never saw the light of day!!! I have many to choose from, and it's about time I made my hobby more interesting. This little hat is from Bev's Country Cottage, and it also starts my collection of hats for charity. I made this fascinator recently for my mothers best friend. (my DD is modelling!!!) The colours are to match a wedding outfit, she was the grooms mother. I have made a couple before, B & W, red & black, and turquoise & cream. They are easy enough to make, you need some craft skills, enough materials, a comb/clip, and lots of patience!!!! Some of the feathers can be expensive, but I shop around. When you are finished there will be feathers in odd places, on your clothes, in your mouth and sticking to your fingers, did I mention that superglue plays a major part in all this!!!!!!

Room Finished

We have recently updated our kitchen/living room and I am pleased with the result. I wanted to update the decor as it has been 10 years since there was any major work done here. Now that my youngest is almost 10 and can be trusted not to write on, or have car rally's around the walls, we bit the bullet and got started when I got my holidays from work. Holy smoke, was it a big job?! We had to move everything out and clean down walls first, that took a day, then tape up, paint the celing and walls. I was totally wrecked!! We got the floor laid on Mon 11th and the new mat (my pride and joy) went down then. I intend to paint 3 canvases which will co-ordinate with the soft furnishing, and I will post them whenever this happens!!!!

I have just heard that my friend has a new baby boy, her first baby. I had a little blue cardigan ready-to-go, and I was not going to be caught out this time, the last couple of babies born to friends were boys and I only had neutral or PINK things ready. I do have a pink one on the needles as well because I wasn't sure if I would be wrong AGAIN!!!

The blue jacket is from a Hayfield Prettier Babies book, and I still have lots of knitting to try from this book.

I have also finished a Peter Gregory Matinee Coat. This is for a

daughter of my mum's best friend, this baby is not yet born so

I am safe enough with the WHITE!!! The pattern wasn't too difficult, although there were quite a few rows in the pattern repeat and distractions were not welcome!!! I am very pleased with the result. My aim is to get away from knitting the same patterns all of the time, try new things, and get through some of the library of patterns which I have. I bought a book of baby knits in a charity shop on Sat for £1.50 - I also got a bundle of books and leaflets in a used book store for €6, there must have been 200 new patterns to try, I was so pleased with this find, plenty of modern patterns, and some very old Patons leaflets too!!

This is another "give-away" cardigan, and yet another People's Friend pattern. The yarn is aran weight which was nice and quick!! I think I will make mock pockets in future as this is what took up the most time when sewing up. I don't think a baby will notice anyway!! I will definitely do this one again, I was pleased with the shape and the collar sits perfectly.

I knit this little cardigan for a friend, the pattern was cut out of People's Friend a couple of years ago!!! I was pleased with the result, although I had just enough wool to cast off the neck, and I like to be certain that I have enough or else I will panic. The body is a little plain and I had intended to crochet a couple of flowers to make it more interesting, but with no wool the same colour, I decided that it was too hard to match up. The funny thing about this peach colour is that when I put on peach buttons, the cardigan seemed more pink and vice versa. I had to search the shops for an in-between which didn't clash!!!

This is a white Emu jacket, although it looks a little peachy. I finished it on 29th May, in good time for the christening.

My aunt asked me to knit this little jacket for a neighbour. The baby girl was small and this is the smallest version of the Emu pattern. The same little girl got the pink picot matinee jacket which was knit for a friends baby, which was a boy, so I'm glad it didn't go to waste!!!

This is my first attempt at socks, and I am willing to try a more complicated pair now, however, the sock yarn and DPN's are not readily available in the local yarn stores, so I will have to do my shopping on e-bay!!

This is an invitation for Afternoon Tea which I designed for a craft competition. The card was part of a display with other people making quilted pillows, patchwork bags, homemade scones & jam, and a crochet baby afghan. I did not contribute to any of these things. Most of the card is recycled materials and a couple of motifs which I bought at a craft fair, ie the cakestand, cup and cake slice. I enjoyed making this card and was delighted when the judge scored me 10/10.

This mint green matinee jacket by Studley was knit "in advance" of a newborn baby. I don't knit a lot of green things for a baby because I don't know if they should be given to a boy or girl!!! I expect that it can be either one or the other. Anyway I bought the wool and knit the first pattern in my baby book, the quickest as it so happens!!

I joined Ravelry earlier this week and can't seem to get the button on my blog, there is something there with an X and I followed all the instructions, also my photos wouldn't stream from Flickr, not my week I guess. I will just have to put the link for each on instead and hope that it will work!!! I would love the buttons to work though, they are lovely.

This is the bronze pig which is displayed beside the Alley Theatre in Strabane, Co. Tyrone. I took the picture when it is nice and shiny, I expect it will go "green" shortly.

I have knit these hats for a chartiy which looks after very small babies in Africa. A friend of a friend of a friend is collecting as many as possible before she leaves for Africa at the end of April. Plenty of time to get a few more done!!! The pattern is from"somewhere on the web" cant remember, but it is simple and is knit from side to side with no decreasing, perfect for watching TV!! I had knit one in white before I discovered that Africans have a superstition about white, so it is pastels from here on.

I tried to load photos earlier, hope they work this time. I am knitting a blue v-neck jacket for a new baby boy, born on Friday 21st, to a friend of mine. I had knit a pink jacket (below) but was proved wrong!! I have also knit a white jacket and a lemon one, but I like to give something blue to a boy as well!!

At craft classes last night we learned how to make jewellery, I must admit that I thought it was as simple as threading beads on a string!!! We made proper stuff using crimpers and pliers and cutters!!! The pictures are of the same necklace & earrings, but one show the colours better. The classes are over, but with only 4 classes, I have learned 2 new crafts, cross stitch and jewellery.

I have finally added the finishing touches to the blue hooded jacket. I also finished the striped jumper last night. There were lots of threads to pull in!!! Both of these garments are for a local yarn store, so I thought it best to log them before passing them on. Both are double knitting.

This week we started an new cross stitch project and made a couple of cards. Some of the other class members made cards with quilled flowers. The cottage was my first attempt at cross stitch and I have taken on a bigger cottage this week! We signed up to go to a craft fair in theKing's Hall - Belfast on 12/4/08. Cards I Made

I went to a craft class recently, the first week it was cardmaking, here are the cards I made. Usually I wouldn't use stick on letters, as I love calligraphy - but time was limited. The first card is decoupage and looks much better in reality, the flower pots are 4 different stampers and pens used to put the colour on the stamper. The other one is just matching up paper and pictures and didn't please me at all!!

It was my first attempt at cross stitch, and I must say I enjoyed it very much. The only probllem I found was that I was so enthusastic that my eyes got red and sore!!! I will stick with small projects first.

I did find a problem which I think I can overcome. When I finished the cross and was at the end of the row, my needle was not in the proper place to start the next row. I discovered that I was sort of working upside down!!! So being me I decided to start at the bottom of the chart and hey it worked a treat, so from now on I will work from the bottom up!!!

Foggy Freezing Day

Well today is cold and foggy, but I suppose it could be worse!!!
I have finished a blue hooded cardigan for a 3-6 m baby and will show it here when I sew on the buttons!! I have started a striped jumper for age 1-2 and it is turning out well. There is a new wool called "fair-isle" by sirdar I think, which knits up like fair-isle without all the threads, great invention, its great for small garments. I am using this for one of the stripes. Not much happening today, just a normal Monday, thankfully. LOL Lizzy.
